So I'm having this exact issue with WP united and wordpress 3.1. It seems like the forum 'works' when im not using template integration. By the looks of it there are two things that you need to do:

First, According to this post in order to get template integration working "The proposed solution was to change the function definition in WP-United to a different name".

Unfortunately I'm a rails programmer and not a php programmer and theyre a bit too different for me to know exactly what this means and unfortunately (again) the forum discussion in this article is down and the second blog post is not specific enough for my needs. Can someone be a bit more specific about which functions in which files need to be changed? Is this in a single file or in a number of them? Djsmeltzer, can you perhaps go into a bit more detail about this? There are too many of us programmers working together here for this "Black Magic Wells" character to abandon us like this with our tails between our legs :)

Second, according to a comment by the user Houli in the "WP-United 0.9" blog post on this site the way to get user integration is to change a bunch of function names in user.php (wp-includes/users.php). Has anyone tested this? Does this work? Any help here would be massively appreciated

I looked at the Piwigopress plugin when I first looked into this. It didn't have the functionality I was looking for. It allows you to add Piwigo images to your sidebar as a widget and I think it also facilitates you adding images from Piwigo into your stories. What I wanted was the Piwigo gallery skinned by the Wordpress skin and to sit within a Wordpress page.

WP United's site is now just a black page with the words "Black Magic Dev ;-)" on them. Anyone know what that might mean? I did a google search, but nothing stood out.

When I left this, I had the embedding working ok, but logins wouldn't work. I never got the cookies to transfer correctly. This made the system as a whole not usable for our purposes. I haven't gone back to it recently, but should get a chance soon.

If you are making the exact same move as I did, from Interactive Tools' Article Manager, then I do have some useful information. There are several tricks you can use to ease the transition.

My first bit of advise is keep the ID fields from the source. You can insert specific IDs into the Wordpress tables as long as there are no conflicts. This makes things much easier as you will not have to update references. You can do this for users and for categories. Saves lots of time and simplifies the thinking process pretty well.

The somewhat harder part of this conversion is the images. Article Manager kept special character sequences to mark where photos went in the text. Wordpress puts the image HTML directly into the text. You will have to do this conversion. The images in Article Manager are stored in an odd format. I can't remember it directly now, but I will see what it was and document it when I find it again. I need to make an update to my import process related to the images and will be revisiting this myself very soon.

Take it one step at a time. I did users, then categories, then a subset of articles. I wrote it as a script I could access easily and re-run. I also created parts of the script that delete the entries so I could re-import. If you do this, be careful to protect your admin user in Wordpress.

I am currently at the very beginning this process. Do you have any recommendations, notes, suggestions or advice for this process (if you can remember)?

Very interested in your current solution and updates. Working on two sites which would benefit immensely from this integration.

Although I would love to see some progress in WP United, I think it is about time we all said a few words over the grave and move on. Hopefully the community at large will continue to want a way to integrate WP and phpBB and another coder will step forward and provide a suitable replacement. I really think that won't happen until phpBB becomes more plugin oriented like WP, providing much more felxibility. The need to edit stock files in order to effect change is just too much to ask.

I would think the developers of both WP and phpBB would love to have a strong integration. The two don't exactly compete with each other, so both would benefit in saying their software integrates with the other.

Holy smokes! http://www.wp-united.com is back up! There doesn't seem to be any new information, but at least the site displays and isn't filled with spam (yet).
